Today, more than ever, a successful jobs search is a numbers game

In any jobs search, there are several elements

  • Networking and personal contact

  • Spreading your resume and "availability" as widely as possible

  • Making sure that your resume survives the "Thirty Second Test"

Networking

Networking first and foremost means contacting former coworkers, former employers and supervisors, business associates and contacts, college alumni associations, professional associations, etc., to spread the word that you are in the jobs market.

Networking means talking to and communicating with PEOPLE!!

The Internet opens up whole new possibilities in networking and researching companies once you know how to do the research. I'll discuss that on another page.

Spreading the Word

Take advantage of the unique characteristics of the Internet. With the click of a mouse, you can reach potentially hundreds of thousands of potential employers and recruiters.

There are two basic ways of doing this:

Resume Distribution Services to Recruiters and/or Employers. Most "recruiter level" positions are for degreed individuals or specialized workers in the IT field. Unless you fit into this description, a broad based recruiter distribution might not be your most effective option.

Posting your resume online, on the various jobs search engines. A major issue to be aware of is that most recruiters and employers have access to just one or two career sites for resume searches, because the major sites cost many thousands of dollars a year, per user.

The best solution, if you are not conducting an extremely "confidential" jobs search, is to pay a resume posting service to post your resume to a large selection of the major jobs sites. For a fee ranging from $59.95 to $89.00, your resume will be posted to anywhere from 75 to 140 sites, depending on the service chosen and your industry and occupation.

Between the needed research and the time spent posting, you literally could not do this for less than 60 to 100 hours of your time.
